Meet Dr. Dawn Liu, Ph.D., D.C., L.Ac., A.R.T. Instructor
Dr. Dawn Liu grew up in a family with a strong tradition of Oriental healing arts and intellectual pursuit. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. With extensive top quality scientific publication, she graduating with the “Best Dissertation Award” of the year. She subsequently worked at Genentech and carried out top-notch research on potential biological treatment for Parkinson’s Disease.
Equipped with years of experience and biomedical knowledge on both health and nutrition, she then pursued and obtained her degrees in Chiropractic, and Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Southern California University of Health Sciences. She graduated with special honor as the very first “duo” Valedictorian for both programs in the school’s history.
Over years of rigorous training and practice in Chiropractic, Dr. Dawn Liu has developed a particular interest and expertise in successful treatment for physical pain and injuries. She is armed with an Advanced Diagnosis skills called Bio-mechanical Diagnosis, as well as one of the most effective treatment for all physical pain and injuries – Active Release Technique (A.R.T.).
The Bio-mechanical Diagnostic approach focuses on the entire body as a whole unit, regardless where the pain is. In short, “no dysfunction is local.” For example, shoulder pain during golf swing may be well related to lack of motion of the opposite hip, and carpal tunnel syndrome is more likely due to problems at elbow and shoulder rather than at wrist. Therefore, unless we properly take care of the root of the problem, as revealed by the Bio-mechanical Diagnosis, the same old problem will occur over and over in the future, triggered by any unforeseen activities. Proper biomechanical diagnosis is essential for accurate detection and treatment of the usually hidden key links of seemingly unrelated symptoms.
Active Release Technique (A.R.T.) is a very unique and highly effective soft tissue technique. It employs motions of the patient along with A.R.T. specific treatment protocols to break adhesions within and between muscles and nerve tissues, which are usually generated as a consequence of injury or overuse. Unlike usual massage therapy, each individual muscle can be specifically treated with A.R.T. This specific approach results in highly efficient recovery of function and reduction of pain. Dr. Dawn has years of rich experience with A.R.T., and is currently an Instructor of Active Release Technique, and teaches this highly effective treatment paradigm to doctors and other health care practitioners. A.R.T. allows Dr. Dawn to help patients to rid their pain and achieve their health goals in much shorter time period, in comparison to conventional chiropractic approaches alone.
Dr. Dawn also brings her training and expertise on Acupuncture and Oriental medicine with emphasis on nutrition to your service. Biochemical and hormonal imbalances account for many modern day syndromes, which are difficult to treat with drugs, such as fatigue, irritability, anxiety, poor digestion/bowel movement, poor sleep, compromised immunity, allergy, weight gain, high cholesterol, PMS, menopause, infertility, and many more.
Nutrition and diet are fundamental for achieving such balance and overall well-beings, yet at this age we are exposed to a flood of information on nutrition through media, which are frequently incomplete, inaccurate, contradictory and difficult to follow. As a seasoned biochemist and researcher, along with thorough education and a long family tradition of Oriental Medicine, Dr. Dawn is an experienced practitioner in nutritional and dietary counseling and nutritional supplements/herbal prescription. She will provide you with individual examination and assessment of your health and nutrition status, followed by specific prescription of supplements, herbs, or simply dietary guidelines tailored toward your unique bodily condition.
Dr. Dawn cherishes the opportunity to serve your needs with her hands and heart, through her knowledge and experience. She will continue her mission to bring the highest quality of care to you, and would like to thank you for giving her a chance to serve you.
Meet Dr. Anthony Cipperoni, D.C., ART
Dr. Anthony Cipperoni comes to the Action Performance team by way of Chicago, IL. Originally born and raised in the Chicagoland area, Dr. Cipperoni attended Loyola University Chicago and received a BS in Psychology and Natural Science.
While there, he also competed as an amateur boxer, fighting in a number of tournaments around the city, including the Chicago Golden Gloves. While training, Dr. Cipperoni suffered a number of injuries, none worse than a traumatic shoulder dislocation while sparring. This led to two surgeries, requiring repair and reattachment of the labrum and biceps tendon.
After two surgeries and months of rehab, Dr. Cipperoni had never fully recovered his range of motion in the shoulder joint and sought out treatment from a number of practitioners including physical therapists, chiropractors, orthopedists and massage therapists. At the time, he was working as an EMT on Chicago’s south side and the physical demands of the job really started to take a toll on his shoulder. It wasn’t until he met an Active Release Technique (ART) certified chiropractor that he started to see some real improvement. After just a few weeks of treatment, Dr. Cipperoni had regained over 95% of the original range of movement in his shoulder. It was this experience combined with Dr. Cipperoni’s love for the human body and working with people that he decided to embark on his chiropractic journey.
Dr. Cipperoni went to chiropractic school in Davenport, Iowa at Palmer College of Chiropractic. While there, he served as president of the sports injury and extremity club and head intern in the sports rehabilitation department. During his 9th trimester, he completed an externship at the Naval Air Station in Lemoore, California. He had the opportunity to work with active duty fighter pilots, mechanics and some of the best and brightest in the physical medicine field—an incredibly rewarding and challenging experience.
After graduating from chiropractic school, Dr. Cipperoni joined a sports injury practice in suburban Chicago. It was here that he started to hone his soft tissue skills and desire to become the best practitioner he can be. It was at this time that he attended his first ART Spine seminar. He decided to continue his education in ART, learning upper and lower extremity protocols as well. He is now a full-body certified Active Release Techniques practitioner. Through ART, Dr. Cipperoni is able to help his patients return to the activities they love with less pain and better function.
Dr. Cipperoni also served as a visiting professor of anatomy and physiology at Chamberlain College of Nursing in Chicago. Here, he was able to continue his studies in the human body and teach students form a variety of backgrounds.
Because Dr. Cipperoni has a strong desire to help his patients be strong, healthy and pain-free, he is continuing his education in Active Release Techniques with an emphasis on treating athletes from two of his favorite sports—golf and CrossFit. Dr. Cipperoni is specifically interested in how he can help athletes develop better techniques with less pain, leading to increased performance. He competed as an amateur golfer throughout high school and early in his college career and has great expertise in the biomechanics of the golf swing. Understanding the different aspects of the golf swing helps him to better diagnose which areas of the body need work. He believes that all athletes have the right to pain-free performance and strives to work with his patients and achieve this goal. He feels the more he can teach his patients about how their body works, the better able they are to take care of it and live a healthier life.
Currently, Dr. Cipperoni lives in San Diego with his wife, Keri, who works as a Critical Care Nurse in the surgical trauma intensive care unit at Scripps Mercy Hospital.
Meet Laurie Weber, ART, CMT
Laurie was born and raised outside of St. Louis, Missouri. She earned her bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Missouri State University and worked in the creative field until 9/11. Shortly after, she changed careers to pursue her passion for fitness training, coaching athletes to reach their athletic goals and racing Ironman triathlons. Laurie said, “At this time, there really was nothing better than encouraging someone, guiding them, and then watching them begin to believe their goal was actually possible, and then achieving it! It was life-changing for them, and kept my fire burning.” It was during this time she experienced the positive impact of ART and bodywork had on her personally, as well as the impact on her client’s recovery and staying injury free.
After 15 years in the fitness industry, Laurie realized her passion for massage therapy while undergoing her own personal physical recovery after a back injury. She credits ART, acupuncture, and a variety of bodywork techniques to help her return to an active lifestyle pain free again. This life event challenged and motivated her to discover the world of soft tissue therapeutics to help people recover, keep injuries at bay and relieve the stress of everyday life. This new passion was the driving force behind her switch to the healing and restoration aspect of wellness through massage techniques. “It is a constant learning process sharpening my techniques and assessment skills. It makes my day when someone can move pain free from a precision therapy session, (like with ART, deep tissue and NMT) or has the ‘massage glow’ from total relaxation with circulatory and deep tissue massage” she commented.
Laurie’s previous career experiences in graphic design and fitness training have fused to make her approach to bodywork unique. With multiple modalities including ART, deep tissue, sports massage, cupping, gua sha, stretching and traction, and neuromuscular therapy (NMT), she uses her creative nature to blend and weave her techniques for the client’s best well-being. Laurie is a full-body certified Active Release Techniques practitioner. She is also pursuing certification in Corrective Exercise through National Academy of Sports Medicine, and Functional Movement Screening under the guidance of Dr. Dawn Liu to provide the most beneficial care possible.
Laurie moved to San Diego via Honolulu, Hawaii, thanks to the US Navy. She and her family love getting into nature, hiking, camping and exploring all that new cities have to offer.
Laurie will be aiding in patient care at our clinic! She’ll also be the first of our practitioners to perform massages, both regular and ART!
